Firefighters contained a blaze at 165 Water Street

A fire broke out around 3 p.m. on October 5, 2023, in a two-story wooden commercial building at 165 Water Street. The first floor had a large meeting room once used by Boss Oyster; above it was a renovated two-bedroom apartment. Firefighters from Apalachicola, Eastpoint and St. George Island used water and foam to bring the blaze under control in about two hours.

No one was hurt, but firefighting water damaged the interior. The people living upstairs had already begun moving furniture ahead of a planned demolition tied to a marina project. The property owner told The Apalachicola Times that a state fire marshal investigator identified an electrical fire as the cause.

Apalachicola moved to replace another round of aging fire hydrants

Apalachicola’s November 2024 grant report said the city had replaced 215 old or inoperable fire hydrants over the previous three years, leaving 110 that still needed replacement. The city had requested $550,000 for the next phase, but received $275,000; staff expected that award to cover about 55 of the remaining units.

By July 2025, the city was seeking bids for the installation work. Its request called for a contractor to remove and install hydrants, while the city supplied the hydrants and extender pipes. Bids were due July 25. The report and bid notice document the need and procurement step, but do not establish how many units were eventually installed.

Construction began on Apalachicola’s African American Museum

Apalachicola broke ground on its African American Museum beside Holy Family Senior Center on September 9, 2025. The one-story, 2,000-square-foot building is designed with exhibition lighting, storage and offices, plus a breezeway connecting it to the center. It is intended to preserve local photographs, artifacts and oral histories collected by the North Florida African American Corridor project.

The shared parcel makes access around the senior center part of the construction picture: deliveries, equipment and any portable restroom trailer have to stay clear of its entrance. The city’s December 2025 update projected a fall 2026 opening. At a September 22, 2026 workshop, commissioners said they were concerned the museum might miss a December 1 completion date and directed the city attorney to write to the contractor and design firm. The minutes did not give a replacement opening date.

Leslie Street got new pipe and road repairs

Leslie Street had been closed since September 2020, when a cavity opened beneath the roadway after Hurricane Sally. Once construction began in September 2024, crews uncovered terra-cotta stormwater pipe and brick manholes. The city’s change orders replaced the pipe with concrete, repaired the manholes and added curbing and final work.

Apalachicola had been awarded $610,169.30 through the state’s Small County Outreach Program, but the city manager told The Apalachicola Times the final cost came in around $470,000. The completed work resurfaced the street, addressed underground drainage and added road signs; a ribbon cutting marked its reopening on March 31, 2025. City grant records later documented reimbursement and closeout.

New owners planned to restore Apalachicola’s Boss Oyster

A new ownership group bought five Apalachicola waterfront properties on June 9, 2026, for $4.02 million, including the longtime Boss Oyster restaurant. A previous ownership group had planned to demolish the restaurants and motel for a marina and a new restaurant. The new buyers instead said they wanted to keep as many of the existing buildings as possible and reopen Boss Oyster by spring.

GeoFlora, an Apalachicola contractor, was retained to handle permitting and construction. Its owner described plans to keep the restaurant’s cypress boards, corrugated metal and familiar look while updating the building to current standards. The immediate work is focused on Boss Oyster; the new owners had not decided what would happen to the other buildings or whether they would pursue the 64-slip marina.

A boat exploded and burned at Battery Park Marina

A small boat appeared to explode while leaving Battery Park Marina on the morning of July 3, 2026, before catching fire between the finger piers. Wind carried it into other boats, leaving three vessels damaged. One nearby boat escaped harm after a resident towed it away with a jet ski while other people at the marina helped, according to The Apalachicola Times.

A woman with burns to her lower body went first to Weems Memorial Hospital and was later airlifted to Shands in Gainesville. Apalachicola and Eastpoint volunteer firefighters fought the blaze, using marina hoses, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission took the lead in investigating what happened.

Apalachicola worked to restore the historic Middlebrook building

Before a new concrete floor went into the Middlebrook building, Apalachicola asked residents to help decide what should be preserved beneath it. The September 2023 appeal sought photographs, newspaper clippings and personal memories, with contributions due at City Hall by September 18. The city asked each person to note their connection to the building.

At Water Street and Avenue E, the structure dates to 1836 and had served as City Hall and the police station. Hurricane Michael damaged it in 2018, and the ongoing restoration was supported by a $395,000 preservation grant from the National Park Service and Florida’s Division of Historical Resources. The time capsule gave residents a small part in the project while crews worked to protect the landmark.

Apalachicola completed utility repairs tied to Hurricane Helene

Hurricane Helene’s damage to Apalachicola’s water-treatment equipment was still being felt in residents’ homes months later. In June 2025, people described discolored, foul-smelling tap water to WJHG. City Manager Michael Brillhart said the storm’s winds had knocked an aerator and scrubber from the Fifth Street water tower, removing equipment used to treat the water’s odor and minerals.

The city’s recovery also reached beyond the tower: its December 2025 update marked four Helene projects complete, covering the odor scrubber, a vacuum-station pump, Battery Park Marina electrical repairs and emergency-preparedness costs. The combined award exceeded $150,000, bringing several different pieces of storm recovery into the same year-end account.

Apalachicola declared an emergency during its June 2025 water crisis

Apalachicola’s June 2025 water emergency followed months of trouble with odor and discoloration. Hurricane Helene’s winds had knocked the aerator and scrubber off the city’s Fifth Street water tower, equipment used to treat the water. A citywide precautionary boil-water notice took effect June 10 as the city worked through unstable chlorine levels and continued flushing the lines.

The response reached beyond the treatment plant. Water tankers and ice were available at several locations, and the city arranged 24-hour shower and laundry facilities at 192 Coach Wagoner Boulevard, alongside tanker and ice distribution.

The emergency declaration ran through June 27. The next day, after the distribution system had been flushed, chlorine residuals stabilized and bacterial samples met state requirements, the city rescinded the boil-water notice.

A December fire destroyed a home on Morris Cannon Drive

Neighbors called Natasha Jones at work around 4:30 p.m. on December 23, 2024, after smoke began pouring from the kitchen-side wall of her home on Morris Cannon Drive. They tried to reach a small fire through a back window, but heavy smoke made it difficult to see inside. The flames ultimately destroyed the house; Jones and her three sons were not injured.

Apalachicola firefighters stayed on scene from 4:51 until about 9:30 p.m. and used the 5,000 gallons carried in their tanker before connecting to a hydrant at Magnolia Cemetery. That supply route temporarily closed Bluff Road, and Eastpoint firefighters joined the response. Firefighters returned around 11 p.m. to extinguish smoldering areas.
