A state grant set aside $1.86 million for Altha’s resilient center
Four years after Hurricane Michael struck the Panhandle, Altha received a $1,856,884 state award to acquire property and construct a resilient community center. The October 10, 2022, announcement concerned funding for the permanent building and its site. It placed Altha’s project in the Rebuild Florida Mitigation General Infrastructure Program.
Altha was one of 24 Hurricane Michael-affected communities sharing more than $126 million in that round of awards. The program's purpose was to rebuild and strengthen infrastructure, extending recovery work years beyond Michael's October 2018 landfall. Land acquisition and construction were both included in Altha’s allocation. The October announcement established the funding, with a groundbreaking date still to be announced.

Officials announced Altha High School as a flood shelter
Calhoun County emergency officials announced on Sept. 16, 2020, that Altha High School would open at 5 p.m. as a shelter. The notice urged people considering the trip to watch for standing or moving water over roads, a reminder that reaching shelter could involve flooded routes.
Officials also warned residents in flood-prone areas that the Chipola River was forecast to crest near Altha at about 31.6 feet later that week. The notice records the planned opening and forecast, not how many people used the shelter or what additional facilities were set up.

The list covered different kinds of eligible work, from debris removal and emergency protective measures to temporary facilities and permanent repairs. FEMA said it had allocated more than $150 million in Public Assistance for Florida recovery from Michael by that point.
The Altha entry identifies library repairs but does not describe the damage or say when the work was finished.

Altha Public School’s campus combined renovation and new construction
The Altha Public School campus project involved more than adding classrooms. Its engineering firm describes demolition of older classroom buildings, renovation of two existing buildings and new construction across a 22-acre site. The school district’s campus now includes administration, gymnasium and cafetorium spaces, along with multiple classroom buildings connected by covered walkways.
The 130,747-square-foot campus combines classrooms, a gym and a cafetorium, with about 40,000 square feet designated as an Enhanced Hurricane Protection Area. H2 Engineering lists the Calhoun County School District as owner and Allstate Construction and Southland as contractors.

Altha sought bids to replace a water main on CR 274 and Chipola Street
Along County Road 274 and Chipola Street, Altha proposed replacing a three-inch ductile-iron water main with six-inch PVC. The work would move along public streets. The CDBG waterline-replacement notice set a December 1, 2026, deadline for sealed bids, to be delivered to Town Hall by 3 p.m. Central and read aloud there.
The notice allowed 120 calendar days from notice to proceed and required a 10% bid bond plus full performance and payment bonds. Dewberry offered free digital plans and $50 printed sets, and contractors had to meet Florida licensing and registration requirements. The town retained the right to reject any or all bids.

Altha put its new community center out to bid
Altha invited contractors to bid on its new CDBG-MIT community center in August 2026. Sealed bids were due by 3 p.m. on September 8 at Town Hall and were to be opened publicly; that deadline has now passed. The notice called for the lowest responsive bidder to receive the award.
The selected contractor has 240 days from notice to proceed to finish the work, with $1,500 in liquidated damages for each late day. As crews set up the site, they will also need room for equipment and a portable restroom trailer.

State records list a generator grant for Altha’s water well
A Florida Department of Commerce grant agreement set aside $54,105 for emergency power at two Altha facilities: the town’s water well and police department. Executed on March 11, 2022, the agreement calls for a Florida-licensed contractor to size and install the generator, automatic transfer switches, wiring and other electrical upgrades so the facilities can continue operating during an outage.
The specifications also address flood and wind exposure. The equipment must be protected against a 500-year flood event—either by being located outside the special flood hazard area or through the listed protective measures—and housed in an enclosure rated for local wind conditions.
A state amendment extended the agreement through September 30, 2027. Its payment field is listed as unavailable and no installation date appears, so the contract documents establish the funded scope but not whether the generator is in service.
Fire destroyed Page Pond Assembly of God, then another fire hit its parsonage
Page Pond Assembly of God lost its church building to fire in August 2023. Calhoun County's sheriff said the call came in around 6:46 p.m. on Murdock Drive, and several fire departments responded. The structure was destroyed, although firefighters saved the neighboring houses and the parsonage at that time; no one was injured, WJHG reported.
By late September, the damaged church was being bulldozed. Then the congregation faced a second fire. Just before 11:30 on Sunday morning, the parsonage caught fire while members were attending church elsewhere.
The second blaze caused no injuries. Members described generations of ties to the property: Stephen Melvin said his grandfather started the church in the 1940s and finished the parsonage in the 1950s. The September report said investigators considered the first fire arson and that the state fire marshal was investigating the parsonage fire.
Altha sought engineering oversight for Fuqua Circle resurfacing
A September 2024 Town of Altha notice sought an FDOT-prequalified consultant for construction engineering and inspection on the planned Fuqua Circle SCOP resurfacing. The notice listed FDOT project number 451700-1-54-01 and said the work was part of the town’s Local Agency Participation contract.
Consultants had to submit letters of qualification to Town Hall by October 10, with responses opened five minutes after the deadline. The notice said the project had FDOT funding assistance. It sought oversight services, not the paving contract, and did not name a construction contractor or start date.
