FDOT’s long reconstruction of SR 70 began in Arcadia

FDOT began rebuilding State Road 70 in Arcadia on August 1, 2023. The multi-year project covers 3.37 miles between the Peace River and SE Baker Street. FDOT’s October 2026 project page still listed construction as active and estimated that the current phase would finish in early 2028. The plan includes new drainage, relocated water and sewer utilities, sidewalk reconstruction and street lighting.

Four intersections—Polk, DeSoto, Brevard and Turner avenues—are slated for upgraded signals. As crews move along the corridor, a portable restroom trailer could follow the active work area, with each setup kept clear of those intersections.

A water-main break disrupted service around SR 70 in 2024

A water-main break at State Road 70 and County Road 661 brought a precautionary notice for customers using Arcadia’s utility service in the surrounding area. Gulf Coast News’ updated April 2, 2024 report also listed a planned interruption that day around West Magnolia, which carries SR 70, and the 900 block of Robinson Court. The scheduled outage ran from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The city’s instructions for restored service were specific: run faucets for about two minutes and flush toilets twice. In the April 2 update, the boil-water precaution was still in effect.

Contractor error released sewage during force-main replacement near SR 31

A March 2026 DeSoto County report described a 400,000-gallon sewage release near State Road 31 during replacement of a 12-inch force main. The county’s utilities director said a contractor removed a valve, allowing wastewater to flow into a lift station that was no longer in use. The county attributed the release to contractor error and reported it to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

The county said no storm drains or waterways were affected, cleanup was complete and a replacement valve had been installed. The report documented the spill and cleanup status; it did not say that the broader force-main replacement had ended.

DeSoto County approved a safe-room application for Arcadia Fire Station 1

DeSoto County commissioners approved an application in April 2026 to build a safe room inside Arcadia Fire Station 1 at 25 East Cypress Street. The proposed room would offer first responders shelter from extreme winds during hurricanes and tornadoes. County records described the approval as a phased project, with engineering in the first phase.

Hurricane Ian had damaged the station’s living quarters, carport and apparatus bays, leaving firefighters without adequate shelter on site during hazardous weather. The $20,000 first phase was split between $5,000 in Community Development Block Grant funds and $15,000 in hazard-mitigation funding.

Arcadia lifted its precautionary notice after water improvements

Arcadia’s July 31, 2026 notice warned of possible water outages on Monday, August 3, while utility improvements were carried out west of downtown. It covered West Hickory and West Oak streets between North Lee and North Manatee avenues. Customers were told to run taps for a few minutes and flush toilets twice when service returned.

For residents, the next step came through a separate city update: on August 11, Arcadia rescinded the precautionary notice for the same two stretches of street. The all-clear covered West Hickory and West Oak between North Lee and North Manatee avenues.

Arcadia approved a water-main extension toward Airport Estates

Arcadia’s City Council approved a $1,057,980 agreement with General Underground in August 2025 for the Airport Water Main Extension, funded through the Florida Department of Commerce. At a September groundbreaking, the city described a new eight-inch line of about 10,000 feet serving airport buildings and reaching Airport Estates, with 18 new fire hydrants along the route. The contractor planned to use directional drilling to limit surface disruption.

A November update described a 2,500-foot section extending into Airport Estates and said residents could choose to connect to city water once the line was in place. That was an option, not a required hookup. The same update said the city had received the state permit and expected work to start December 10, 2025.

Fire crews responded to a damaged home on Forrest Avenue

DeSoto County deputies and firefighters went to a structure fire on Forrest Avenue in Arcadia on January 23, 2025. In an update at 2:04 p.m., the sheriff’s office said several crews were working to put it out. Images from the scene showed heavy smoke and severe damage to the home.

Officials said nobody was injured and traffic was not affected at the time, though deputies asked residents to avoid the immediate area while crews worked. The report was still developing and did not state how the fire started or give a final damage assessment.

A broken service line forced a detour on State Road 70

Westbound State Road 70 needed an unplanned detour on August 15, 2025, after a water service line disconnected beneath the pavement in front of Arcadia’s library. FDOT said the service line had separated from an eight-inch water main and announced that traffic would be diverted within the hour. The repair was initially expected to take at least two hours, with more time possible if crews encountered complications.

The temporary route sent drivers south on NE Oak Street, along E Oak Street and then north on US 17 to rejoin westbound SR 70. FDOT asked motorists to follow the posted signs, remain alert and allow extra travel time while the work took place.

Arcadia received a $14.2 million grant to widen its stormwater channel

In December 2025, Florida announced a $14.2 million award to widen Arcadia’s main stormwater channel and add storage during storms. A separate $8.5 million award was listed for construction and expansion at the city’s wastewater treatment plant, bringing Arcadia’s two awards to more than $22 million.

The announcement was part of a $311 million round covering infrastructure projects in 37 communities. WWSB reported that the awards came through programs supporting communities affected by the 2023 and 2024 storms.

The state release described funding, not completed work. It named no contractor, gave no construction start date and did not say when the two Arcadia projects would finish; this remained a funding-stage update.
