Two workers were injured in a West Orange Trail bridge collapse

Apopka firefighters and police responded at about 8:30 a.m. on July 25, 2024, after scaffolding partially collapsed on a pedestrian bridge connected to the West Orange Trail. The bridge was already under repair when it gave way. Two Orange County contract workers were hurt, evaluated at the scene and taken to a local hospital for further care.

Other workers at the site were safe, and officials said the cause remained under investigation. The report did not give a cause or say when the bridge repairs would resume.

Apopka reports differed on 2025 façade grants

In a December 16, 2025, letter to Orange County, Apopka reported that six commercial properties received $56,230 through its Façade Renovation Assistance program. Two businesses also received $10,000 in Building Code Assistance, separating exterior improvements from code-compliance work.

A later 2025 Community Redevelopment Agency annual report gives different totals: $46,243 for four properties and no Building Code Assistance awards that year. The two city reports conflict on the final figures, so the annual report remains the latest published account. The CRA reported spending more than $1.7 million across its redevelopment work that year.

Apopka finished a 10-foot downtown trail

Apopka’s Downtown Trail reached completion in fiscal year 2025, adding a 10-foot-wide asphalt route connected to the West Orange Trail. The city’s December update put the total at $1,332,373, including design, engineering and construction. That figure represents the whole project, rather than just the paving visible to someone walking or cycling through downtown.

The finished trail became one of the public improvements Apopka highlighted in its annual redevelopment report. Other completed work that year included new equipment and full resurfacing of the basketball courts at Alonzo Williams Park, showing the trail within a wider year of recreation and public-space work.

A suspected lightning strike sparked an Apopka house fire before July Fourth

Kimberly Mondragon and her daughter Bianca ran from their Apopka home after a thunderstorm on July 3, 2025. The family told FOX 35 that lightning struck a tree only feet from the house and the fire spread from there. Power was later shut off. By the next day, the reporter could see siding that was charred, melted or torn away.

Apopka firefighters said they had brought the fire under control quickly, and no one was seriously hurt. A roommate who had been outside described feeling an electrical shock and was checked by paramedics. The family was still waiting for the insurance process to begin when FOX 35 visited, while the Red Cross was in contact and offering support.

Orange County approved emergency drainage work on Ocoee-Apopka Road

Repeated flooding along Ocoee-Apopka Road between South Hawthorne Avenue and Marden Road led Orange County to use emergency procurement in early 2025. On February 25, commissioners ratified a $1,403,973.63 contract with W.T. Comp Inc. to add gutters, curbs and inlets and modify drainage controls. County staff said runoff had affected nearby homes and a commercial property, and that work needed to be finished before the next rainy season.

The contract grew after a conflict surfaced between the drainage plans and Apopka’s potable-water force main. In June 2026, Orange County approved a $193,200 change order for utility relocation, bringing the total to $1,597,173.63. The county said Apopka would reimburse the relocation cost under an interlocal agreement.

Martin Road work changed traffic near Apopka High School

Apopka warned of congestion outside the high school before water-main work began on Martin Road. A city notice posted August 30, 2024, set the planned work period from September 9 through February 28, 2025, and said contractors would block part of the road while installing replacement pipe.

Because the job ran in front of an active school, the work zone had to leave the entrance and student routes clear. A portable restroom trailer for the crew would need the same setback. The city asked drivers to avoid the area if possible, use caution and follow project updates. Its notice gave a planned schedule, not a final completion date.

Police investigated a fire set at Kelly Park School

Fire crews arrived at Kelly Park School around 4:50 a.m. on August 14, 2023, after someone started a fire at the entrance. Apopka police released surveillance images and asked for help identifying the person, who was shown with a face covering and a backpack. Investigators said the fire damaged the entrance of the K–8 campus at 4700 Jason Dwelley Parkway.

The school was still relatively new: construction had begun in February 2021, finished in May 2022, and the first school year followed that August. The reported investigation involved Apopka police, the fire department and the State Fire Marshal’s Office; the article did not identify a person charged with setting the fire.

Apopka pumped down Border Lake while planning a permanent flood solution

Apopka began pumping water from Border Lake in late June 2025 to ease flooding around State Road 436 and Piedmont Wekiva Road. By the July 16 council meeting, staff were seeking more stormwater funding to keep rented pumps running through August 31. Some residents remained frustrated, telling News 6 they could see little change after weeks of pumping.

The city’s initial plan called for five pumps to operate for up to 60 days and lower the lakes to levels set by the St. Johns River Water Management District. Its initiative named Border Lake, Blue Lake, Lake McDade, Piedmont Lake and Lake Page.

A permanent pump-and-pipeline system remained the longer-term goal, both to control lake levels and provide additional reclaimed water for residential use. Summer pumping was meant to provide relief while that system was designed and built.

A sinkhole drained part of Apopka’s Golden Gem water pond

Apopka first spotted erosion at its Golden Gem reclaimed-water pond in January 2024, after an infrared satellite image showed soil movement. A visual inspection later revealed a tear in the liner. By April, Mayor Bryan Nelson told WFTV that a suspected sinkhole beneath a pump had been draining the pond for about seven weeks. He said the water was only five feet deep when the hole appeared, well below its 30-foot maximum, limiting the immediate damage.

Crews plugged the sinkhole between July and September 2024. At a February 2025 council presentation, city staff said tests at three residential wells showed no adverse impact to the aquifer and monitoring found no impairment at Rock Springs. That closed the first repair phase, but the pond was still out of service while the city considered a larger restoration plan.

The proposed work included a geophysical scan, replacing the liner with compacted clay, closing off the northern cell and adding water circulation. Published capacity figures differ: Nelson described a 300-million-gallon pond in April 2024, while the city’s February 2025 presentation described two cells holding 200 million and 50 million gallons.

A 25-acre brush fire closed part of SR 414 near Apopka

A brush fire near State Road 414 and Lakeville Road—at the old landfill—grew to an estimated 25 acres on April 26, 2025. Multiple units responded, and westbound SR 414 closed temporarily near mile marker 5 while crews worked. Fire Rescue reported the fire out at about 6:27 p.m., then stayed to check for hotspots.

Officials reported no injuries or immediate threat to nearby structures. FOX 35 reported that the fire came as Central Florida faced worsening drought conditions and a region-wide burn ban. The cause had not been announced.
